AIMST University, founded on 15 March 2001, is a private university established by the Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED), the educational arm of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), a component party of the Barisan Nasional Government in Malaysia. Located in the northern Malaysian state of Kedah Darul Aman, the university is the brainchild of YB Dato' Seri S.Samy Vellu, President of the MIC.

INTRODUCTION

AIMST University is registered with the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of Malaysia, as a tertiary educational institute under Sections 38 and 39 of the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act of 1996. It formally began its operations on 30 October 2001, coinciding with its registration with the Department of Private Education under the Ministry of Higher Education.

A sprawling 230 - acre site at the foothills of Gunung Jerai in the historically important Bujang valley in Semeling (Kedah) is the permanent campus of the University. Self-contained and equipped with state-of-the-art teaching and laboratory facilities, the campus with its purpose-built Great Hall and Experimental Theatre, a well-designed Library located in close proximity to the Faculty buildings, well-furnished student and staff residences, a Student Complex replete with facilities such as bank, post office, student clinic, book store, mini-market, etc., an Indoor Sports Hall linked to an Olympic-size swimming pool and spacious outdoor track and field facilities, is ready.

Imbued with the vision of its founders, AIMST aims to be a premier private sector university in the country and region catering to the needs of local and international students in providing quality technical education at an affordable price. The curricula for most of the degree programmes are drawn from the University of Bristol in Britain.

Most components of the degree programmes include computer training, writing and research in order to prepare students for work and to provide them with the ability to apply technologies to all aspects of their education. Admission to the degree programmes requires the applicant to meet minimally the prescribed grades in the relevant subjects at the matriculation (local or overseas) level or possess other equivalent qualifications acceptable to AIMST University.

The medium of instruction for all courses is English, although the importance of the National Language will be emphasised in all activities of the University. AIMST University will provide language support for students before and during their degree studies to ensure an acceptable level of fluency. Student support services in the areas of counselling, health, career placement, sports, cultural activities, tutoring and individualised assistance to students with special needs, will be adequately provided for and continually upgraded in as much as these comprise an integral part of AIMST Univerdity’s mission to develop a vibrant academic, social and cultural campus environment.

1980
The Malaysian Indian diaspora was going through a difficult phase. With a twenty-twenty vision, as the nation marched tirelessly towards the avowed goal of reaching the developed nation status, our community in particular was in danger of being left behind. Will the Indian community be able to keep pace with other dominant races, particularly in the field of education? It was strongly felt that if we were to enjoy a fair share of our national cake of wealth, imparting the right kind of education in our students was a must. However much we may echo the much-hyped notion that education forms the backbone of any civilization, it was also imperative to ask inwardly: how strong was our educational backbone then? Were our students empowered to pursue the courses of higher education of their choice? Were our youth economically liberated to go up the educational ladder without fear or favour? Was the number of graduates that we could churn out year after year proportionate to our population? It was evident that the answers to these questions would have meant what sort of a legacy we might leave behind for posterity.
Realising that education formed the basis for the all round development of any civilization, the Malaysian Indian Congress President, Dato Seri S. Samy Vellu rightly established the Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED) as an educational arm of the MIC. The role of the Institute was to provide the necessary means to the deserving and needy Indian students, to get education.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1990
Our maiden effort to establish our own brand of technical colleges materialized with the establishment of Tafe College Seremban and Tafe College Kuala Lumpur. The aim was to make education available to every Indian youth, who shall inevitably shoulder the future of their community.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2000
After serving the students for more then 20 years, MIED reached the pinnacle of its achievements. Echoing the call to transform Malaysia into the education hub of the region, MIED, under the stewardship of its chairman YB Dato Seri S. Samy Vellu, embarked on a noble mission of establishing a state-of-the-art private University in the country.
The Asian Institute of Medicine Science & Technology was born with much hope and expectation. The physical construction of the university is now fast nearing completion. Since the University requires being equipped with modern, state-of-art, infrastructural facilities, financial support for this venture should be continued to be solicited on a wider scale.
A jewel in the crown of MIED, AIMST is all set to become the leading private University in the country specializing in Medical Sciences, and other faculties.
